Steering Through Chaos
By Scott Wilson

For those pastors who never worry about making changes in the church, you do not need this book. For the rest of us, I recommend you pick up the book yesterday and finish it tomorrow. It is that good.

Wilson is the Lead Pastor at the Oaks Fellowship in Dallas and has, with God’s enablement, done the unthinkable. He has reinvented a church with a rich history into a church reaching multiplied thousands in the Metroplex and beyond. In Steering Through Chaos he recounts many of the crossroads he encountered as he embarked on the transition from that great past to the even better future.

This book maps out a clear direction for the church you lead while you are in midst of transition and change. While reading the book I found myself energized to think about what could be in advancing the Kingdom at the local church level. The author is very honoring of the past, particularly since his dad pastored the church before him. At the same time, he acknowledges a new day and the need to do things differently.

He makes a bold statement on the back cover of the book, “Don’t predict change in your church…PLAN ON IT.” In the book he covers topics of turning points, vision, timing, authenticity, prayer, endurance and celebration. He also describes the pastor’s need to recognize opportunities and avoid obstacles, and he points out the need for a great coach.

What I may appreciate most about this book is Wilson’s very real understanding of the human element in dealing with change. There are no formulas. He brings people along in change. Further, he is specific in articulating the Spirit-led component of who we are as a church.

Scott Wilson has nailed it in Steering Through Chaos. I highly recommend the book.
