Confessions of an Insignificant Pastor
By Mark Elliott
Have you ever wondered if you are the only pastor that really is not all that sharp; is not sure what you're doing; has baggage, emotions, and motives...and believe it or not, feels a bit like a yo-yo sometimes?
When you first see the title of this book you wonder if Mark Elliott has an inferiority complex and maybe even sounds a bit insecure. When I asked him that in a podcast interview he answered, "Yes, I'm insecure just like you and everyone else." Hmmmm...a little hard to argue with the truth.
I am not sure that I have read many books that read as easily as this one. Mark really is very comfortable in his own writing. The book flows well and keeps the reader's attention from start to finish.
The book takes a look at the realities of ministry. You will find yourself in agreement and relating to a good number of the first 15 chapters. When you get to chapter 16, he takes off like a riveting novel admonishing the reader to never quit.
There are times through the book that I want to say, "Oh come on, Mark." But then after I take off my "I have it all together" persona, I find myself agreeing that, on many fronts, what he writes of happens frequently in the lives of pastors. Even if you do not agree with or relate to the entirety of the book, there is such an overwhelming Biblical reference to those who do not measure up to having it all together that the book serves as a great "reality check" for most.
When reading, one must remember all the personal challenges faced by pastors do not happen in a short period of time. By the time a person gets a numbers of years under their belt, they will experience almost all of the feelings Mark Elliott addresses.
I appreciate the fact that in all observations you are challenged to think positive. Men and women of faith in Scripture faced many of the same feelings as you are and God is with you regardless of the failings of people and the ministry.
If you question your need to read something you think might be a downer, think again. At the end of each chapter a Power Prayer and Faith-Filled Confession is included for the reader to connect with themselves and with God. Read the book, adhere to its words, and whether you feel insignificant or not, you will never quit. God's call on your life will continue through life!
