First Things First
By Kurt and Brenda Warner with Jennifer Schuchmann
Sometimes you read a
celebrity book and wonder, “Is this all there is to these people?” Or, “This has to be hyped to sell more
books. ”Not so with First Things First. When you read the rules of being a
Warner…what works, what doesn’t and what
really matters most, you realize you are reading the real deal.
The publisher says, “First Things First is an intimate,
no-holds-barred look at life inside the crazed and chaotic Warner household. Writing from a his-and-hers
perspective, Kurt and Brenda share candidly about their marriage, the values
they are working to instill in their kids, things they’ve done right, mistakes
they’ve made along the way, the importance of giving back, and the lasting
legacy they hope to leave behind.”
This book debunks any ideas
of a family of perfection. While
raising seven children Kurt and Brenda demonstrate how hard they have to work
on their parenting and their marriage…like the rest of us.
I loved some of the comments
made from Brenda toward Kurt. The
one that sticks out in my mind was, on the occasion of preparing to go to the
banquet where Kurt was to be presented with the “Man of the Year” award, one of
the not-yet-potty-trained kids had wiped poop all over the front door. Kurt asked what to do. Brenda told him, “You’re man of the
year. I’m sure you can figure it
out!” Gotta love it!
I was particularly impressed
with their clear communication of the importance of their faith in all they
do. God has blessed them beyond
measure and they acknowledged that over and over again.
This is an outstanding book
for people who love sports and who may not know God. Pick one up for yourself and for them!
