Mind Over Meth
By Debra Hedgcorth
This book is for the long-time Christian who may have forgotten the
beauty of a life transformed. It is a book for the “Anything” addict
who has given up hope. Everyone else will sit back in amazement as
they read Mind Over Meth!
A couple of years ago at church,
I heard Debra Hedgcorth and her husband, Chris give their testimony of
deliverance from Meth-addiction. My sad confession is that it had a
“Wow that sounds really good but I wonder how long it will last” feel
to it.
This book was fascinating to read. Debra pulls no punches. She
describes in vivid detail a childhood not unlike others all around us
have experienced. She describes the generational cycle that every
child says will never happen to them when they become adults.
The teen and adult decisions she made are described with detail and in
honesty. She never glamorizes those decisions, actions, or
consequences of the lifestyle she describes.
The author reminds you that people like her shop at Wal-Mart with you,
pass you in the mall, sit at your kid’s ballgames with you, and see you
in the lobby at church. People affected by Meth and similar drugs have
to read this book. There is hope!
One of the things I found particularly encouraging was to read how as a
child she had on-and-off attendance at the Christian Church in her
town. There are people who set examples for her, taught her, provided
rides for her, and smiled at her, displaying the love of Jesus. They
will never know how much impact they have on a hurting world today
through the writings of the one they touched, Debra Hedgcorth. Another
addict will come to know Jesus because someone back in the 70s and 80s
did at the Christian Church with a little girl named Debra that which
Jesus would have done.
A good number of Christians may not be familiar with the world the
author describes. We need to be familiar with it and do all we can to
reach to the Debra and Chris Hedgcorths all around us. God smiles when
we do.
My thanks go out to Debra for communicating with such clarity the pain
of sin and darkness and the phenomenal goodness of our God who pulls
people from that to Himself. Read Mind Over Meth and give it to those
who have never heard that God loves them just as they are and that
there is hope. The rest of us need to read and say “Thank you!”
