The Purpose Driven Church
By Rick Warren

The copyright date of 1995 is a long time ago. Rick Warren's inside back flap picture illustrates that fact. However, unlike 99% of books published, this one is fast becoming or maybe already has become a classic.

Most are familiar with Warren's description of the five circles of commitment. However, few of us really apply these circles to our churches. When a pastor truly understands the DNA of the community and the crowd, he is in a much better position to encourage the commitment to the congregation. When that understanding is in place the committed and the core can be developed to the highest level possible.

Books like this are not nail-biters, but I will say it is a compelling read. The author understands "church." He is truly a church entrepreneur who expresses great confidence in the church's and his own ability to reach lost people. Sometimes you think it sounds arrogant, but you always end up stepping back and seeing that it truly is an expressed confidence in what God can do when we are intentional in our efforts to reach lost people.

I heard Warren speak at an event in August. When I heard him talk about reaching Muslims with your hands first, heart second and head third, I knew I was listening to a man who had been freed of the hidden restraints we place on ourselves in how we reach the community and the crowd. He understands that to have the congregation, the committed and the core that pastors desire it all starts with touching people.

Most of you don't have to buy this book. Just get it off your shelf and read it. You'll kick yourself for not having done it sooner.
