Showing Up for Life
By Bill Gates, Sr.

When you have a son like Microsoft's Bill Gates and you are writing a book, somebody will buy it. I did and I read it. You might consider the same.

Whatever you think of the son, you have to give credit to the dad and mom for raising a son who, for his part, changed the world. Gates had three children (Bill in the middle) and writes openly of the challenges and opportunities in raising each of them. Heritage, family, and legacy mean a lot to Bill Gates, Sr.

Beyond the obvious interesting references to his celebrity son, Gates covers a litany of topics: leadership, doing right, hard work, our neighbors in Africa, thinking and showing up. He believes showing up for the things that count in life are of high value. He is articulate throughout the book.

I must note there are two chapters where I scratch my head and ask how an intelligent guy who raised a good family and appreciates the values of family can think in such a mixed up way on a couple of key moral issues. I hope he comes around and that God puts people in his life to that end.

This book will not revolutionize your life and ministry. However, it will challenge you in healthy ways.

Let me end with the Foreward to the book by the richest man on the planet. "Dad, the next time somebody asks if you're the real Bill Gates, I hope you say, 'Yes." I hope you tell them that you're all the things the other one strives to be." Any dad would cherish that endorsement.
