Simply Strategic Volunteers
By Tim Stevens and Tony Morgan

Simply Strategic Volunteers: Empowering People for Ministry by Tim Stevens and Tony Morgan, Group, 2005.

What church do you know of that says, “Well, looks like we have plenty of volunteers”? There are none. There is no magic secret, and authors Tim Stevens and Tony Morgan do a masterful job in walking the reader through the realities of the heart of every church, its volunteers.

In Simply Strategic Volunteers, the authors do justice and then some by valuing volunteers in the highest possible way. There is no diminishing of that high calling. By the way, Stevens and Morgan are no strangers to the nuances of recruiting, training and leading volunteers. At book publication time they served as executive pastor (Tim) and pastor of administration (Tony) at Granger Community Church in Indiana.

If you have read either of their other two books in the series, Simply Strategic Stuff and Simply Strategic Growth, you know of their genius in writing unbelievably short chapters. Volunteers has 99 chapters, normally two to three pages in length, maybe a long one at four. The point is, they cover a lot of territory in quick manageable bites.

Ever seen a volunteer that simply wanted some kudos (like we all do)? Covered.

Ever seen them want to protect their turf (like we all do)? Covered.

What about debriefing, awards, incentive, mission, discipleship, evangelism? Covered.

How about blame, conflict and lone rangers? Covered.

What about high capacity volunteers? Covered.

Stevens and Morgan could not have concluded the book any better than they do in chapter 99. It’s title: “Don’t Give Up.” In ministry with volunteers, always remember Galatians 6:9 (NIV): “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
