The Think Big Manifesto: Think You Can Change Your Life (and the World)? Think Again by Michael Port, John Wiley & Sons, 2010.
Author Michael Port tags himself as “The Guy to Call When You’re Tired of Thinking Small.” He is the creator of ThinkBigRevolution.com, a global social networking site for big thinkers, has been called a “marketing guru” by the Wall Street Journal and has been featured on every major network.
The Think Big Manifesto is a secular book that has application for the church. Why in the world with the greatest mission on planet earth would the church not want to “think big”? The subtitle of the book is Think You Can't Change Your Life (and the World)? Think Again.
The author states, “We are more than we know. We can do more with less than we think. We will think bigger about who we are and what we offer. But this big thinking must happen now; today, tomorrow, and forevermore.”
Port makes a solid case for big thinking and, in turn, the case against small thinking. He writes of standing for something, collaboration, getting comfortable with discomfort, doing what you say you will do, and submitting to authority. He is clear in his challenge to live in integrity, work hard, and have fun. He is abundantly clear on “the time is now.”
The jacket cover says it well, “The Think Big Manifesto is about changing every aspect of your life—from the way you work to the way you relate to friends, family, and community. With real examples that inspire and inform, the book isn’t only about thinking big in your career, but about your very place in the world.” Written for a secular audience, I suggest it has all the application in the world to the church.
