Think Missional: Becoming the People God Intended, Les Welk, General Editor, Northwest Ministry Network, 2008.
There are some in the church world who suggest that organized faith groups sometimes referred to as denominations are out of touch with the real world. There is much that denominations could do to improve their image for relevance to their constituencies. On the bright side, however, I am starting to see pockets of that critical relevance emerging in many denominations.
One such group is the Northwest Ministry Network, a part of the Assemblies of God. In their book Think Missional; Becoming the People God Intended, General Editor Les Welk pulls together an outstanding group of contributing writers.
What impressed me early in reading the book was its focus on evangelism. While not ignoring the call to worship, to disciple, to build community and to serve in compassion, Welk and his team articulate well this critical component in the life of the church and its leadership, that of proclaiming the message of the Gospel. They do so in relevance to the 21st century church.
Think Missional defines the word “missional” and communicates a missional mindset, the kingdom of God and missional living. It aims the church outward while reading cultural context, making it relevant. Writers are clear that evangelism is a spiritual journey and that spiritual conversations should be the norm in the life of the believer. I like the fact that the book is clear that a healthy church reaches the world.
While wrapping up Think Missional, the writers explain what is easy and describe what is hard. “Love is a verb.” Wow! Sounds nice. Put feet to it, and it is work—the most rewarding on the planet. Reaching those without hope in Jesus is the heart of Think Missional.
